If you compare a Twitter discussion to a BlackBoard discussion then you would notice that Twitter limits the amount of characters (140) you can have in your message. This will force the user to condense each of his messages to the point. In other words, each message has to be concise on Twitter or the message will not be tweeted. On Blackboard, you do not have to worry about the character limit. The user does not have to think twice about how to shorten the message to 140 characters. Furthermore, the BlackBoard discussion board seems to be more organized in terms of date (ascending/descending order). However, Twitter seems to be more cluttered and you have to find your classmates posts if you’re following other people (not your classmates).
If you compare a Twitter discussion to an in class discussion then you would notice that both are similar in the sense that both discussions can be in real time. (For Twitter to be in real time, the users have to be online to reply) In class, you have to respond to your peer or the professor immediately. However, on Twitter, you do not have to respond immediately and you are given more time to think about what you are saying. Though Twitter does limit your message to 140 characters in a post. You do not have to think about any limits when speaking. You’re free to ramble on within an in class discussion. I find that it is also easier to speak than to type out your thoughts. (I dislike writing in this case) On the other hand, twitter does keeps an archive of what you discussed rather than you trying to remember what you have discussed in class which I find in this case handy.
