Social Networking Sites

I do not have that much time to examine all the features a social networking site can offer so bear with me on things I might have missed.

The only social networking site I use now is Facebook but I’m rarely on Facebook (a few times a month). Facebook seems to have the most users online simultaneously. (Most likely everyone you know is on Facebook.) Facebook is basically for connecting with people you personally know (not always the case). You can catch up with my friends and family after a hiatus. Facebook have status updates where you can share your thoughts or stories or events (news feed). Facebook also has a chat feature which is similar to the role of an instant messenger (I do not know if anyone still remembers AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). The layout is not customizable but Facebook tends to change the layout often confusing many users.

I have not use MySpace in a long time. MySpace is similar to Facebook but with a twist. Facebook and MySpace are similar in the aspect that users can post messages on each others profile. MySpace has the same concept of profiles as Facebook. What separates Facebook from MySpace is the ability to customize your profile. You can change the background image and add a music gadget. I seem to associate MySpace with artists and creativity when MySpace was popular. Over the years MySpace seem to have lost many members of their user base to Facebook.

Twitter is a bit different than Facebook or MySpace. You can “follow” any user that you have similar interests with. If you follow a dedicated user of Twitter, then that user will usually update their status. However, you do not necessarily need to know the person to follow that person on Twitter. For example, you can follow a celebrity that you do not know personally.  You can also post your own messages or updates but the message is limited to 140 characters. This forces the user to be concise when posting a message on Twitter. Twitter tends to be useful for recent news before it hits old media.

I just made a Google + account and it seems to be similar to Facebook and MySpace. Google + has a status update feature similar to Facebook and Twitter. Google + has this feature of grouping people, friends and family in different circles. You can choose which circle you want updates from or share updates with any circle of your choice on Google +. Google + seem to have a follow feature (follow people you do not know personally but whose posts you find interesting) similar to Twitter. I guess Google + have more degree of control on which circle you want to share with. Google + has a +1 feature which I do not what it does but I think it is similar to the Facebook “like” button. Google +  interface is similar to Facebook and it is simple to use.

Overall, most of the social networking sites are similar in terms of features but I rather keep up with one social networking site than many social networking sites simultaneously.
